Lowland Tapir
Tapirus terrestris
Tapirs are shy and largely nocturnal. Their compact streamlined shape is ideal for pushing through the dense forest undergrowth in the rainforests of Central and South America.
This is the Brazilian Tapir, it is the closest living relative to the Rhinoceros, having three toes on its rear feet.
Sadly, all tapirs are rare due to mans hunting of them for food and habitat destruction.
They eat leaves, branches and long grasses, they use their flexible nose as a snorkel!
